Hurricane Alex formed in the Atlantic Ocean Thursday morning, the National Hurricane Center said. The hurricane has winds of 85 mph and is headed north-northeast at 20 mph, toward the Azores. Alex is the first hurricane to form in January since an unnamed storm in 1938, and the first hurricane to occur in January since Alice of 1955 (Alice began in December 1954), the center said. Ref.
