Ohio Teacher Burned Cross On Students' Arms
This is absolutely crazy, is this guy a religious fanatic? I cannot comprehend how he would so something like this to his students!

| MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - A public school teacher taught creationism in his science class and used a device to burn the image of a cross on students' arms, according to a report by independent investigators. Mount Vernon Middle School teacher John Freshwater was insubordinate in failing to remove a Bible and other religious materials from his classroom and continued to preach his Christian beliefs despite complaints by other teachers and administrators, according to the report released Thursday by consulting firm H.R. On Call Inc. The Mount Vernon school board voted 5-0 Friday to pass a resolution of intent to terminate Freshwater's contract. Board attorney David Millstone says Freshwater is entitled to a hearing to challenge the dismissal. A lawyer for Freshwater says he will request such a hearing. The report, which was conducted by independent investigators, comes one week after a family filed a federal lawsuit in Columbus against Freshwater and the school district, saying Freshwater burned a cross on their child's arm and that a burn mark remained for three or four weeks. Freshwater's friend Dave Daubenmire defended him. "With the exception of the cross-burning episode. ... I believe John Freshwater is teaching the values of the parents in the Mount Vernon school district," he told The Columbus Dispatch in a story published Friday.... |

Any person with common sense would know how wrong this man's actions were. I do not know of a society where branding children is an acceptable social practice. Sounds to me like this man was not working with a full deck at the time. Fanaticism causes people to lose perspective and do things that are outside their normal behavior.
Unfortunately, fanaticism like this puts all religious freedom at risk. When people go to extremes trying to force their own values and beliefs onto others with a total disregard for the laws or personal choice of other it causes problems for everyone. The societal reaction is often banning everything as a result of over zealousness of a few.

Ohio Teacher Burned Cross On Students' Arms UFO & Writing Art Education Sciences
If someone burned a cross into my childs arm, or anywhere else they would have to get a restraining order on me. I would probably spend a day in jail for assault and battery. If a teacher harms a child while they are in their care where was social services on this? I know for a fact that if a parent did this to their child social services would have the child in state care in a blink of an eye. It is ridiculous that a teacher can get by with more than a childs own parents can. There is a reason there is separation of church and state and this is a prime example.
