Convicted serial killer eyed in 1987 Fort Collins murder

QUOTE DENVER — State and federal authorities are investigating a convicted Colorado serial killer for the unsolved 1987 slaying of a woman for which a man was wrongly convicted, a Denver newspaper reported Saturday.
The FBI and Colorado Attorney General’s Office are investigating Scott Kimball, 44, who pleaded guilty last year to second-degree murder in the unrelated killing of four people, including his uncle, the newspaper reported.
A law enforcement official familiar with the case confirmed that state and federal authorities are looking at Kimball as a possible suspect in the killing of Peggy Hettrick in Fort Collins.
The person could not speak on the record because the investigation is still open.
Kimball is a suspect because of similarities in Hettrick’s slaying and a 2004 killing for which he is also a suspect, the newspaper reported
In that case, the body of Catrina Powell, 26, was found behind a strip mall in Westminster in 2004. Her hands had been cut off, and her killer also sliced one of her breasts’ nipples and tissue from her groin.
“That sounds just like the case in Fort Collins,” said Dr. Mike Dobersen, Arapahoe County coroner, who consulted in Hettrick’s case.
The Colorado Attorney General’s Office did not comment because a grand jury is investigating the Hettrick case. The FBI also did not comment.
Hettrick’s slaying has become one of the state’s most famous homicide investigations because the man convicted in 1999 of killing her, Timothy Masters, was freed in 2008 after defense lawyers showed that new DNA technology pointed to a different suspect.... Source 8p
