If you were tested and knew BEFORE having children that you have a 75% chance of having a child with Autism will you still have children?

Yes, I would. I know it would be hard but I would still want to have my own children. I still want to have more kids despite one having mild autism.

Supposed it is a severe case of Autism though? You are talking about a life long daily struggle with ONE child. Having multiple children like that can't be justified if you ALREADY know it will be like this.

But that's just the point. There is *no* way to know this. The only thing they can find is a predisposition and even that is inaccurate sometimes since there are families with their first 3 kids with autism and have others who are not autistic or families having "typical" kids and at the end having one with autism. Hence it is called "genetic lottery".

Taking the emotional baggage out of the equation I would say no way. Again that is a typical male logic first then ponder why the emotional need is felling empty.

I still think I would be very temped to adopt not a new born but an older child. I know you are still in the same risk as they might have the same issue or even bigger ones that are life threatening. As far a last child having issue and not the first that can be age and diet related as well.

At this moment I cannot say that I will be encouraged to have children that I knew will be autistic. I can only say yes if there is sufficient for them on arrival: home with big grounds, support groups, etc. Adoption will be more tempting.

Some statistics concerning having multiple children with autism:

QUOTE
If one sibling has autism, the probability of having another sibling with autism is 3 percent The probability of having another sibling with some form of cognitive problem or language is 15%. The article also says that if there are 2 autistic siblings, the probability of having a 3rd is 35%. Dr. Cook cautions that many factors can distort these statistics. In addition, Dr. Cook pointed out that parents should take into consideration that ALL people run a 5% risk of giving birth to a child with some sort of disability.

If the possibilities of having a second child with autism is so low, how come there are so many families with 2, 3 or more kids with autism? Could be after all an undeniable genetic factor?

I hate to think it but I have pondered that myself on occasion as I know some families that it runs fro every generation. Some of the families I wrote it off to drinking when pregnant but not for all. Might also be a case of you have two certain genes coming together to create the autism gene.
