Matthew is now a 'dangerous' Category 4 hurricane as it approaches the Florida coast

The National Hurricane Center said Hurricane Matthew, with 140 mph winds, is now a Category 4 hurricane. The storm is expected to hit the Florida coastline Thursday evening. Hurricane warnings now extend into South Carolina. Ref. USAToday.

The death toll from Hurricane Matthew has risen to 264, Haiti's Civil Protection Service said.

In Florida, Gov. Rick Scott has told residents in evacuation zones to go inland as Matthew approaches packing 130 mph winds.

"You still have time to leave. Get out. There's no reason to take a chance,” He said Thursday evening.

In other developments:

Hurricane Matthew remains a Category 4 storm with winds of 130 mph, according to the latest National Hurricane Center advisory. As of 8 p.m. ET, Matthew was about 75 miles east of West Palm Beach, Florida.

President Barack Obama declared a state of emergency for Florida and South Carolina.

Based on the latest projections, Matthew could make landfall in Florida as a Category 4 storm, or it could skirt the coast and head north.

The storm has forced the postponement of a number of college football games, including Saturday’s scheduled Florida-LSU game in Gainesville. Ref. CNN.

I have the feeling this is going to be one of the biggest natural disasters in a long time. Hurricane Matthew is no saint despite its name and if some models are correct it can his the east cost twice.

Historic Hurricane Matthew is stalking Florida's east coast early Friday.

Here's what you need to know:

The western eyewall of Hurricane Matthew is now just 5 miles off the Florida coast nearing Cape Canaveral

The hurricane has been downgraded to a Category 3 with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph

Forecasters predict storm surge in some areas could be as high as 11 feet and as many as 15 inches of rain could fall

Florida Power & Light reports 307,250 customers are without power

The National Weather Service warned that some places could be uninhabitable for weeks or months. The effects of the storm will be unlike any hurricane in decades, it said

At least 269 have died in the Caribbean, officials said -- most of whom died in Haiti Ref. CNN.

Death toll from all states hit by Matthew now at 15 as severe flooding continues

The death toll across the four southeastern states affected by Matthew, now a post-tropical cyclone, has climbed to at least 15, with nearly half of them in North Carolina. Rain totals in North Carolina have been over a foot in some areas with 18 inches in Wilmington, 14 inches in Fayetteville and 8 inches in Raleigh. Ref. USAToday.

Hurricane Matthew 2016

About 1,500 people are stranded by floodwaters from Hurricane Matthew in Lumberton, North Carolina, Gov. Pat McCrory said.

"We have people on roofs as we speak," he said this morning.

McCrory said the Federal Aviation Administration has ordered flight restrictions over the area so rescue helicopters can work.

Ten people have died in North Carolina, bringing the US death toll from the storm to 20. Ref. CNN.
