This is one of the reasons I would not want to venture out on a cruise today, it is almost like being in a floating coffin. These people were really fortunate considering the pirates were carrying heavy artillery. It is good that the cruise ship had the foresight to carry this sonic weapon:

QUOTE
The sonic device, known as a Long Range Acoustic Device, or LRAD, is a so-called "non-lethal weapon" developed for the military after the 2000 attack on the USS Cole in Yemen as a way to keep operators of small boats from approaching U.S. warships.

Piracy is a concern when considering sea travel, however simply avoiding cruises and journeys by sea is not the best way of handling the situation. Steering clear of the danger and simply ignoring it doeasn't mean it is no longer there. it just means that the pirates have got what they wanted, and managed to terrorise more people, scaring them from using the waterways.

Why would anyone want to go sailing near the Somali sea borders anyway? Maybe its one of those bubble brained captains that thinks it could never happen to him.

Or perhaps the captain works for a large multi-national who have told him that he is passing by Somalia with the ship, on its way to the next destination where the holiday makers will be able to leave the ship for a day trip.

As I said above, we shouldn't give in to terrorists and pirates by simply avoiding the waters they inhabit. This is a problem which ought to be dealt with.

I don't get you. The ship wasn't military was it, so why shouldn't they avoid hostile waters?
