Why Do We Grow Old? - Page 2

You're not wrong, there is an inverse correlation between heart rate and max age.

But since there are exceptions, I think it is safe to assume that one doesn't cause the other, and the heart rate is simply a function of size.

So, the larger the animal tends to be the slower the heart rate? This is why elephants live a relatively long time and humming birds don't?

Why Do We Grow Old? Health & Special Psychology

Basically yes, more body mass requires slower and more powerful heartbeats to get the blood where it needs to go. Its a bit like the difference between high and low gears ratios on an engine, or just a bicycle. The more physical power you need to push everything along, the less speed you're going to get out of the system.

The question is whether or not the correlation between heart rate and age is actually a factor. I think it is a minor factor at best.
