Intellectual Humility & Politics

For a modest personality trait, 'intellectual humility' packs a punch

'Intellectual humility' has been something of a wallflower among personality traits, receiving far less attention than such brash qualities as egotism or hostility. Yet this little-studied characteristic may influence people's decision-making abilities in politics, health and other arenas, says new research. In a time of high partisanship, intellectual humility -- an awareness that one's beliefs may be wrong -- is nonpartisan. Researchers found essentially no difference in levels of the trait between liberals and conservatives. Ref. Source 5f.

Maybe what we need to do is check people's intellectual humility and arrogance before we vote for them. We could vote out a bunch of the arrogant ones who think there is only one right way to do things, their way, and vote in a bunch who realize there are multiple right ways to do things when it comes to some of the complex issues we are dealing with today. Then, perhaps, Democrats and Republicans would actually work together.

What how dare you talk in such a way? Democrats and republicans working together. Might as well ask oil and water to mix or cats and dogs to get along.

Most people I talk to seem to like those they voted for never mind the intellectual humility. They want everything to be status quo.

Yeah, that's because our country is splitting apart at the seams. The people on the left watch MSNBC, read Slate, and yell how horrible President Trump is and nothing he does is good, even if it's something they agreed with a week ago. The people on the right watch Fox, read Drudge, and say that every issue wrong with this country is exclusively President Obama's fault. Of course, neither is true and the stuff we watch and read is so slanted that it doesn't let us come together anywhere near the middle like we used to.

I think that is because the masses have very little in the way of intellectual humility. Thus they do not see what is happening to our great country and since so far it is not effecting them they just do not care. When it does start to effect them well then it is going to be too late.

My goodness, you could be right in that. Maybe intellectual humility is just a minority view now. Or perhaps, the terrible slant in the press now is feeding this intellectual conceit of the vast majority of us on the right and left. It appears there is very little middle left. Or perhaps, and this is my hope, the vast middle is silent because we aren't fed up enough yet… but hopefully that day is coming.
