Government Control

Within many of the Threads discussion has taken place on the aspect of what rights humans have as a society, but here we are going to focus on what 'rights' the government have or should have / not have.

international QUOTE
JAY EVENSEN: ONE MAN'S RIGHT IS RESTRICTION TO SOMEONE ELSE

Many of us were raised on the conventional wisdom that one person's rights end where the next person's nose begins. That's a simple, but effective, way to explain the complex notion that even in a free society, government has the right to impose restrictions on how we interact with each other.

Control Government

In a nutshell I believe the purpose of government is to protect the peoples rights. Therefore I would say the rights of a government are, to train, recruit and support a standing army to be used solely against other nations who have directly threatened the country or citizens of the country, to make and enforce laws necessary to protect the citizen's property and life, to coin and print money so that the economy can run smoothly and efficiently, to provide fair trail and just punishment applying the concept of mens re, and to serve the interests of the people in dealing with foreign powers. After that I believe the government should let the people live as they please.
I know this is a pretty open ended list that can be interpreted many ways. Most governments could justify anything they do under this list, however I mean it at a bare bones level.
