Recent studies have demonstrated the healing power of music in a variety of different medical situations. Listening and singing has been shown to create new connections across both lobes of the brain and create new connections where none exist, particularly in children and those suffering from traumatic brain injuries that cause a damaged connection between the halves. This is also being seen put into action with Alzheimers patients that have musical training. It has been shown that although these people may not be able to recognize even the faces of their children, they can recognize tunes from their childhood and even remember how to play their instrument (To an extent). Other studies relating music to slower progression of Parkinsons and other degenerative diseases has been shown. Music has been shown to lower cortisol (Stress hormone) in certain individuals and relate to a variety of other biological sensations. The question is this: Do you believe that it is worthwhile to invest into more research on music as a medical tool and possibly a science of itself? Or should music continue to be funded exclusively as an art form and means of comfort?
