Heinous Monstrous Thoughts

Has anyone ever expressed to you an act they wished they could carry out but knew it was too monstrous or be criminal to do? Are such thoughts normal?

I don't know if I personally have ever had any thoughts of doing something criminal, but I've had people confide the things they've done to me, so I know what it feels like to try to come to terms with something someone has told you.

I think the real question is at what point do criminal acts determine a person's character? When they think of doing them, or after? I grew up being told that our thoughts eventually become our actions.

If thoughts become actions I would be incarcerated for a long, long time. I do have some serious evil thoughts that go through my mind but I am of a mind to think of the what if a person did this and come up with a elaborate scheme and then try to figure out a way to stop it from happening.

If someone came up to me and told me something they have done or have planned to do I would tell them not to do it and give them reasons why they should not do it. If they have already did it I would try to give them advice that could solve their worries and what steps them may need to do to rectify the situation. If it was something very serious I would probably make a citizens arrest and take them to the police.

I'd have a hard time believing any adult that claimed not to have such thoughts from time to time. If random thoughts actually defined a person's character as much as actions do, we'd all belong on death row.

It isn't until the compulsion is strong enough that it can no longer be described as a simple flight of fancy that one should be concerned.

I agree with you. I watched A Time to Kill recently and I thought about what I'd do if someone raped one of my girls. Those thoughts were ugly, one would think monstrous. I would think at one time or another most adults has had a random thought flit in and out. It's the acting on them that changes the equation.
