Large asteroid to safely pass Earth on Sept. 1. Asteroid Florence, a large near-Earth asteroid, will pass safely by Earth on Sept. 1, 2017, at a distance of about 4.4 million miles, (7.0 million kilometers, or about 18 Earth-Moon distances). Source 5k.

Florence Asteroid

That's a pretty big chunk of rock and ice travelling out there. One day one of them will be on a course to hit the Earth… we need to be ready. The fact that this is so far out that you have to look at it with a telescope though means we are quite safe.
