All models have it making a direct hit on Miami for its next major landfall. They are hoping that it will go down to a cat 4 storm by then but if it stays out to sea before then it may not lessen and hit a major city as a very strong cat 5 storm. They will get to see just how strong those new reinforced buildings stand up to a strong Hurricane. They have not been tested yet.

Irma Hurricane

This thing has gusts that are well over 200 mph. That's like a tornado's winds, only over a much larger area. Those buildings will need to be very strong indeed to stand up to this monster if she comes ashore as a Cat 5.

Hurricane Irma History & Civil Business Politics

They are saying that when it makes landfall at the tip of Florida it should be around 145-155 winds. The issue with this is that they stated it would only be a cat 4 Hurricane as it was getting close to the Dominican Republic/Haiti. It is still packing winds at 185 for over 33 hours now and that is unheard of. The fact that there is gust over 220 in the Hurricane makes it even stronger and looks like it will retain its strength with the current track it is taking. If that is not enough you have Hurricane Jose following Irma and Katia in the gulf that could once again hit Texas.

It looks like they are predicting Jose will hit the Antilles and then veer further east than Irma that to the prevailing weather patterns. The cone they have for it looks like there is a better than even chance it doesn't hit the US at all. Of course, it is still very early in the storm's life to be sure of this and it could easily surprise us.

Hurricane Irma kills at least 8 people in French island territories in Caribbean. France's interior minister said that in addition to the deaths, it knows of 23 people who have been left injured by the powerful storm that could reach southern Florida by the weekend. Ref. USAToday.

Hurricane Irma

The pictures I have been seeing today from Irma.

Really, really harrowing to see. The extent of the damage to St Martins & Barbuda in particular is unprecedented!

According to a local councilor on Barbuda, at least 95% of the islands properties have been damaged in some ways. Too but the roads & infrastructure have been obliterated, schools, churches, shops, electricity etc etc.

The president has sad that in it's current state Barbuda as being "Barely habitable"! The Red Cross have stated that it is destruction on an unprecedented scale! Shocking. Heart goes out to those affected by these horrific scenes.

Looks like Turks & Caicos Islands as well as the Bahamas, and the storm surge of water is predicted to reach 20feet high! As if the winds and rain weren't enough!

With winds now hitting in excess of 220mph this beast is massive. Looks likely that Irma will hit Florida on Sunday. Most likely headed toward Miami therein. sad.gif

Thoughts and best wishes to those already caught up in the wake of this hurricane and to those whom see to be in it's path.

Yes, this is a monster and it is bearing down on higher and higher populated areas. They talked about a western track that brings it up the Caribbean coast of Florida, and Eastern track that brings up the Atlantic coast of Florida, and the worst outcome would be the central option that has it come ashore between the coasts and track up Florida, bringing catastrophic flooding and storm surge to both coasts.

Conditions in the Turks and Caicos deteriorated Thursday as deadly and massive Hurricane Irma moved in on the islands -- and continued tracking toward South Florida where it could slam Miami this weekend.

"It has become more likely that Irma will make landfall in southern Florida as a dangerous major hurricane," the National Hurricane Center said.

Irma -- a Category 5 storm churning in the Atlantic with 175 mph sustained winds -- killed at least six people a day earlier as it devastated small northeastern Caribbean islands and left hundreds of thousands in Puerto Rico without power.

Here are the latest developments:

-- Irma was about 40 miles south of Grand Turk Island around 5 p.m. ET. The storm could cross the Bahamas later Thursday evening.

-- A new Irma forecast puts Miami in line for a direct hit.

-- Mandatory evacuations are in place for parts of Florida and are expected to expand. Georgia and South Carolina have issued mandatory evacuation orders that will begin Saturday.

-- 40% of gas stations in Miami-Fort Lauderdale are out of gas. Fuel trucks are getting state police escorts to gas stations to address the shortages.

-- Jose, now a Category 3 storm, became the third major hurricane of the Atlantic basin season.

If you're near Irma's path, here's a checklist to help you prepare. You can continue to track the storm here.
