How To Play The D&D 5e Warlock Class

We shall discuss the Warlock class in the Dungeons & Dragons 5e role-playing game. What are the benefits of playing the character class of Warlock? Does playing a Warlock have a down side? How should one properly play the Warlock class?

Warlocks are oddballs in many ways. Their spellcasting works differently to everyone else.

It is a common misconception that warlocks are necessarily evil. Understandable, if incorrect. One of my favorite characters was an Ancients Paladin/Archfey Warlock. Several potential warlock patrons are good aligned, and there are even cases where an evil fiend may mark a good aligned character with its power for its own reasons.

Unfortunately, the efficacy of the warlock depends on the campaign more than the build. They shine when given the chance for multiple short rests in a day, but fall behind other casters when not.

Either way, good warlock builds typically capitalize on the at will abilities they gain. The potentially can choose the best damage dealing cantrip in the game, at will detect magic, the best ritual casting, the best familiars, among other things.

I like the idea of the character gaining that "Other-worldly" pact in an effort to secure a better deal in life. Than otherwise might have been available.

I noticed their spellcasting is a little different than other mages to. The repertoire, of spells may be less than a Wizard, but thankfully replenished after a short rest.

The eldritch blast, cantrip, is not like the typical offensive spell either. Some kind of repelling force, resembling more of a laser beam, than a fireball, or lightning bolt.

Not a thinker like the wizard, with his arcane, and knowledge check. With a spell like hellish rebuke, and hold person, I do have to remind myself that he isn't necessary evil character either.

I can see an example of my Warlock character, as a Jedi knight, having the potential for both good and evil. Look at holding person spell!

The Warlock bringing the chaotic into the structured.
Not that I would ever want to play an evil character. Chaotic neutral at worst, I would play.

But maybe at the next level, he should get fiendish vigor, and or devils sight? Might help?

Unfortunately, not much info on the net for fleshing out these other-worldly beings. Or getting insight into their worlds. Maybe it can be made up on the fly?
