I like it as one of the two you can pick, if you're going to choose one early on to enhance your survivability. But then I never make it past "Early on" and I still can't understand how people afford to be magic users.

I think it's a great choice for the beginning. I wish it wasn't 0.5 each level though. It's expensive to just get a couple levels.
I think this guild, the fighters, is a good basic grounding because a lot of your encounters could be ripe with combat and death if you aren't prepared.
