Using Drugs During Labor

Remifentanil during labor could halve the number of women needing an epidural. Half as many women in labor who were given a drug called remifentanil to help manage their pain needed a subsequent epidural, compared to the women given pethidine -- the current standard of care, according to an open-label randomized controlled trial. I've always thought that all these drugs during labor is no good. Can we really know for a 100% it is not affecting the baby in some way?
