Academic Seminars: Men vs Women
Women much less likely to ask questions in academic seminars than men. A new study reveals a stark disparity between male and female participation in departmental seminars which helps to explain the 'leaky pipeline' of female representation in academic careers. The observational study of 250 events at 35 institutions found that women are 2.5 times less likely to ask a question in seminars than men. The researchers argue this reflects significant differences in self-reported feelings towards speaking up and offers recommendations to ensure all voices are heard. Source 6r.
