Trump says in tweet Army Gen. Mark Milley will be the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the military's highest-ranking officer. Milley will replace Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford whose second, two-year term expires in 2019. Milley has been a member of the Joint Chiefs since August 2015 when he took over as the Army's top officer. A career infantryman, he has deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan and commanded conventional and Special Forces units. Ref. USAToday

My main hope is that whomever takes over our armed forces will do it with America in mind and not one person. That they will also be smart enough to know when and when not to act on an order that could mean the end of all of us.

Joint Chiefs Chairman Mark Milley said it was a ‘mistake’ to walk with President Trump to St. John’s Church amid protests. "My presence in that moment and in that environment created a perception of the military involved in domestic politics," Milley said at a National Defense University commencement ceremony Thursday. Peaceful protesters outside the White House were forcibly cleared June 1 so Trump and other officials, including Milley and Attorney General William Barr, could walk to St. John’s Church for a Trump photo op.
