9 of the 10 largest cities in America still allow ‘ambulance diversion’ when hospitals are full, which can have deadly outcomes. Emergency departments in hospitals nationwide have been quietly deploying the controversial tactic of ambulance diversion, which allows officials to turn would-be patients away. A Milwaukee Journal Sentinel review of the 25 largest cities found 16 of them allow ambulance diversion of some kind. In Milwaukee, a woman collapsed next to the best stroke center in the city, but her ambulance was turned away and she died. Ref. USAToday.
