Privacy bill's dark irony: Government would be allowed to read emails without needing a warrant:

An attempt at overhauling online privacy laws has been re-written on Capitol Hill to comply with requests from law enforcement so that emails and other personal communications can be more easily obtained by the police, CNET reports. Ref. Source 8

Every month, the [American] government finds new reasons for invading the privacy of it's citizens. I know that for many [Americans] that's not a problem but is the main reason why I would never live in the US.

Its not just in America but at least with us you get a hint they are doing it rather than with other governments doing it secretly but not letting their citizens know about it.

Wow... How is this constitutional at all? I find that both the US and Canada are both becoming less democratic. I hope we do not continue on this trend.

I don't deny that other governments might do the same thing, only more secretly. But scanning the citizen's life in an open and legal way is worse because it becomes a right. People will have no defences against their government's intrusions. In other countries, news about such an activity would right away cause a political crisis that would probably end up with the head of the government (president or prime minister) resigning from his position. But, if it becomes legal, that's the end of any claim about the respect of personal freedom and human rights.

This may bother people who have something to hide, if I have something I rather no one read or hear then I tell it in person and not through phone or email because all those things can be tracked if not by the government by some other snoop.

Is not about having something to hide, Fair. How many times you cried on the phone with a friend when something bad happened? Or maybe you told your boyfriend that you were late with your monthly period or countless other examples. You are right when you say that others can always intercept your phone calls or e-mails. But is depressing that the legally authorized spy is the same subject that should protect you from these intrusions.

I don't think I will call it depressing but it certainly is intimidating. At the same time with technology the way it is I see it as necessary because using a chat program people could coordinate an attack or act of terrorism without even having to meet.
