Why Aren't There More Black Doctors In The USA?
After decades of effort, African-American enrollment in medical school still lags. The proportion of U.S. Medical students who identified as African-American or black rose from 5.6 percent in 1980 to 7.7 percent in 2016 — a substantial increase, but still well short of the 13.2 percent in the general population. The disparity matters because doctors of color can help the African-American community overcome a historical mistrust of the medical system — a factor in poorer health outcomes for black Americans. I'm very much for the increase of African-American doctors in the US, however it'll take a long time for people to fully accept since history's effect is still present even in the medical sector. According to the news article even some doctors were advised to pick nicknames because their real names are too hard to pronounce for the locals.
