Was Joseph Supposed To Start A Church?

Was Joseph Supposed To Start A Church?

I got the following submission from a guest, but this kind of thing I save for the Mature LDS Section:

QUOTE
Name: BOMC

Consider the following:

1. If Joseph was to be prophet and leader of a people he would have retained the use of the Urim and Thummim, like prophets before him did.

2. Does The Book of Mormon say you should routinely baptize everyone when they turn eight for "the remission of their sins?"

I could mention others, but if the baptism one doesn't cause one to pause, the others won't raise their eye brows either.

David Whitmer said Joseph admitted he was to preach on TBOM not start a church. Imagine if he did that, and used his influence to pursuade others to TBOM and not a church, how further along we'd be right now! Sad.

See Source 2

On the main page is a sample of revelations that Joseph made changes to, the one you site above is a perfect example.

We have no affiliation with that site, consider what is said and please place your thoughts here.

Church Start Supposed Joseph Was

So, from a quick survey of the site, it appears that this group accepts Joseph as a Prophet, only as far as he taught what they want to hear. Anything more than that is false.

The 1st section of the D&C puts the lie to their claims. Of course, since it is outside of their desires, it must also be false.

Was Joseph Supposed To Start A Church? Studies Doctrine Mormon

The Book of Mormon itself is filled with examples of Prophets establishing the Church throughout the land.

QUOTE

Mosiah 25: 19
  19 And it came to pass that king Mosiah granted unto Alma that he might establish churches throughout all the land of Zarahemla; and gave him power to ordain priests and teachers over every church.

In essence there is proof that the Book of Mormon advocates the creation of the Church of Christ in each city and or dispensation.
The problem with this group is that they believe in the prophetic calling of Joseph Smith as a translator. They seem, however to reject his prophetic gifts of revelation (The Doctrine and Covenants) and a prophet of the restored Church of Christ. I do not believe that you can have one without the other.

It is also prophesied that the Jews must have a church to belong to in the latter days

QUOTE

2 Ne. 9: 2
  2 That he has spoken unto the Jews, by the mouth of his holy prophets, even from the beginning down, from generation to generation, until the time comes that they shall be restored to the true church and fold of God; when they shall be gathered home to the lands of their inheritance, and shall be established in all their lands of promise.

Unless a True church is restored, then this Scripture cannot be fulfilled. You cannot believe in the Book of Mormon and also not believe that a Church was to be established in the last days for that purpose.

Finely we have the words of Christ, who states that the Book of Mormon alone is not adequate.

QUOTE

20 For it shall come to pass, saith the Father, that at that day whosoever will not repent and come unto my Beloved Son, them will I cut off from among my people, O house of Israel;
  21 And I will execute vengeance and fury upon them, even as upon the heathen, such as they have not heard.
  22 But if they will repent and hearken unto my words, and harden not their hearts, I will establish my church among them, and they shall come in unto the covenant and be numbered among this the remnant of Jacob, unto whom I have given this land for their inheritance;

An Earthly Church is required to receive covenants. A love and faith for the Book of Mormon, in and of itself, is not enough according to the Savior.

I suspect that these people object to the doctrines of premortal existence, eternal progression, plural marriage, and other doctrines that "mainstream" Christians object to. This way, they can accept the Book of Mormon teachings of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, while rejecting all of the advanced doctrines of the Father.

I am not trying to put my finger in a sore area but isn't some of these points things our Church also objects?

Having said that, there are so many "beliefs" out there within the LDS Church that is hard to fully understand their points.

True, many in the Church ignore a lot of doctrines, but few actually object to them. However, the mainstream actively objects to them.

Here is another thought. If Joseph Smith was to translate the Book of Mormon, what was the purpose? Why have the Book of Mormon, if not to change the perceptions of those who profess to follow Christ? If those perceptions are changed, then how can those changes become permanent, if there is no church teaching them?

I thought I would look into this but the link to his site does not work anymore, I guess there was not much interest in keeping it up. As for the title, I believe Joseph Smith continued the church Christ originally set up rather than "started" one.
