I can definitely believe that because relatives can have the mind of a criminal but they don't have to work as hard to get to you because they use the excuse of relationship to get close to your money.

Not just your money. My father came to visit last week and over the course of a few days managed to scam me out of all of my beer, a fridge full of food, and hours of my precious time to keep him entertained. I can’t believe I let myself be scammed again and again like that.

I am not merely trying; I am succeeding. A useful addition to one's psychological bag of tricks is 'a sense of humour'. Works wonders for seeing the world as a fantastic place to be.

Humor is only humor for those who consider it that way. As for me this topic is very real and is a very bitter memory. It has caused me to be more distrustful of people and less willing to entertain pleas from people who I thought were genuine and blood.

For that I am sorry. I too have family members with such a chequered past that nobody wants to deal with them anymore. Others are almost as bad but haven’t tipped over the edge into complete ostracisation. All you can do is try and be supportive, whilst nailing down your valuables. Our joke is that hopefully they don’t also take the nails. Due to my own oddity, people assume I’m the black sheep of an otherwise normal family; all you can do is laugh as it helps keep you from going mad. “Sure… normal family… ”.
