My name is Rika, and I finally turned sixteen and got the opportunity to escape from my daily routine!
I grew up like an ordinary girl in our area. I am short with tanned skin and long black hair tied in a single braid. I never liked physical labor, but I was forced to do it a lot in childhood due to the fact that we lived poorly and my mother often needed money, so I have a thin physique and my body is used to the hardships of a harsh life.
My mother always told me that because of my slanting eyes I looked a little cunning, but she always noted that I have a kind soul, although I am often restless.
Yes, I do not deny that I am often overly energetic, but it seems to me that this is for the best! I am enthusiastic about everything that interests me, and despite the fact that I have a rather nondescript build relative to an ordinary villager, I feel that I must have some kind of magical gift or something like that! Nature loves balance, doesn't it? True, I would not call myself an assiduous person, but enthusiasm can compensate for this shortcoming, right?
To be honest, I only go on a journey because I'm bored. I'm tired of living like an ordinary country girl, so I want to know where my own road will take me.
Plus, I'm always interested in meeting new people. Yes, sometimes people around me consider me strange and infantile, but I really do not wish anyone any harm and therefore I do not think that someone will be seriously opposed to me!
First of all, I will probably try to study magic, since the world is cruel and dangerous. However, I don't really like to sit in boring libraries for huge books, so I want to study magic, wandering around the world and communicating with people, as probably the very first magicians did! After all, there have not always been ready-made volumes of spells by which young wizards are taught?
Of course, I'm not sure where this road will lead me, because I don't really believe that such an ordinary girl like me can ever become truly famous. I'm just wondering how this will all end and if it will end at all…
A Sentimental Value
I had a little time before I left home for good, so I took the thing that first caught my eye. It was a portrait of my father: to be honest, I did not remember him at all, but in my mind he was always a person who left home and, probably, could live a more interesting life than my mother. I guess I tend to idealize people I know little…
Plus, maybe with his help I can find people who knew my father! I'm sure we could be friends with them.
One evening, when Rika was in a hurry to finish her work and take the collected medicinal herbs for sale, an unknown rider, who was also late somewhere, quickly swept past the girl with a basket. Frightened, she dropped the basket of herbs and the valuable goods scattered on the pavement.
Rika immediately began to collect the fallen herbs. This was given to her with difficulty, because in the late afternoon a strong wind rose, and a couple of tied bundles of some rare tea was blown away by a sharp gust of air somewhere into the alley. Rushing after him, the girl ran into a guy peeping at her from the darkness.
It was an extremely awkward meeting, but the stranger defused the situation by declaring that he accidentally saw Rika collect scattering herbs and wanted to help, but hesitated for a long time due to innate shyness.
While the girl was packing the goods back into the basket, the guy, clumsily trying to help, confusedly spread his story. He was the youngest son in a farmer's family, and if the older child was raised by the father so that he could inherit his farm, the youngest was raised by the mother. She gave him an unusual name for the village, Andreas, in the hope that he would be able to get out into the city and become a respected person there, even though he would not get his father's inheritance.
Following the wishes of his mother, he moved to the city and only a few days had passed since that moment, so Andreas had not yet had time to get used to this place.
Being the same age, Andreas and Rita became friends easily. Despite the fact that the guy wanted to stay in the city to move up the career ladder and Rita was attracted by the thirst for travel, they decided to keep in touch to help each other succeed in this unfamiliar world.
