Do you rather the concentrated efforts you get out of machines or the power achieved from free weights?

GYM DITCHES HIGH-TECH FOR NO-FRILLS WORKOUT

At this gym, there are no Cybex, Universal or Nautilus machines. The hundreds
of weight plates piled around the place look like 1950s castoffs from the
Soviet Bloc. There's no carpeting, just a concrete floor and a few rubber
mats.

Weights Dead Vs Machine

Is there really a need for all the high tech equipment? My father used to lift weights when he was younger and he talks about a time before all the fancy equipment. I remember training for football in highschool and we didn't have all the fancy training devices that they do now. We ran and had free weights. We didn't have a nautilus machine, when ran up and down hills with someone on our backs. The "need" for all the special equipment, in my opinion, is only a perceived need and not real. You can work out just as good without it, you just don't look as cool!

Agreed - the Dead Stuff is much better, however one thing I will give machines - they allow you to push yourself a little bit more than you could with dead weights. For example let's say I am using a Smith Machine to do Bench Presses - you will find that because of the safety features involved I am able to press more weight, but if I were using Dead or Free Weights then I would have to consider two things: 1. Not maxing out the weight in case there is trouble or 2. having a real good spotter you can depend on. Lastly, of course there is big business in machines, but not in just dead weight since you can always buy enough dead weight, but never seem to have enough machines.

Comments: If you want all round conditioning then machines can do that but true power and growth comes from handling free weights.
