Mississippi Abortion

Mississippi voters rejected an amendment to the state constitution that defined life as beginning at the moment of conception, CNN projects based on reported results.

The measure would have made it impossible to get an abortion in the state and hampered the ability to get the morning-after pill or birth control pills that destroy fertilized eggs.

Disposing of unused fertilized eggs could also have become illegal, making in vitro fertilization treatments more difficult. The measure could have led to a nationwide debate about women's rights and abortion while setting up a possible challenge to the landmark Roe v. Wade case, which makes abortion legal.

Also, CNN projects that Mississippi voters will approve a measure to amend the state constitution to require a person to submit government-issued photo ID in order to vote.

Abortion Mississippi

Funny how something like this is left up to each state but at the same time it does give people a choice where they want to live and have an abortion 'legally'.

Mississippi Gov. Signs Bill That Could Make it Abortion Free

The governor of Mississippi has signed a bill that would make the state the first in the nation to be without an active abortion business if the only one in the state can't comply with the sensible new law he signed.

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant on Monday signed a bill putting new requirements on the books for abortion practitioners who operate in the state. They would have to be certified in the state as an obstetrician-gynecologist with admitting privileges at a local hospital in case a botched abortion requires a woman to be immediately hospitalized.

"This legislation is an important step in strengthening abortion regulations and protecting the health and safety of women," Bryant said in a statement. "As governor, I will continue to work to make Mississippi abortion-free." Ref. Source 8

Mississippi Genius: Non-Abortion Ban May Ban Abortions

The state of Mississippi is down to one abortion facility and the governor signed a bill yesterday that exemplifies the kind of genius seen nowadays in pro-life legislation. A measure that protects women from unscrupulous abortion practitioners who have no ability to admit them to a hospital in cases of botched abortions may be the ticket to essentially shutting down the last remaining abortion clinic in the state. Last Abortion Clinic in Mississippi Struggling to Stay Open

Thanks to numerous pro-life laws approved over the years, Mississippi is down to just one abortion business and it is now struggling to stay open because it is having difficulty complying with another new pro-life provision.

The state legislature, earlier this year, approved a measure that abortion backers strongly opposed because it could result in stopping abortions at the last remaining abortion facility in the state, making it the first abortion-free state in the country. The law, which goes into effect July 1, requires abortion practitioners to have admitting privileges at a local hospital in case a botched abortion requires a woman to be immediately hospitalized. The Jackson Women's Health Organization abortion facility is having a hard time securing admitting privileges for the three abortion practitioners it employs, as the Clarion Ledger newspaper reports: Ref. Judge Blocks Mississippi Law to Make it Abortion Free

A judge blocked a Mississippi law today that would make the state the first in the nation to be without an active abortion business if the only one in the state can't comply with the common sense regulations it requires.

In April, Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant signed a bill putting new requirements on the books for abortion practitioners who operate in the state. They would have to be certified in the state as an obstetrician-gynecologist with admitting privileges at a local hospital in case a botched abortion requires a woman to be immediately hospitalized. Mississippi Abortion

A federal judge in Mississippi has ordered an extension of his temporary order to allow the state's only abortion clinic to stay open.

The order will be in place until the judge can review newly drafted rules on how the Mississippi Department of Health will administer a new abortion law.

The law, which took effect July 1, requires all abortion providers in the state to be certified obstetrician/gynecologists with privileges at local hospitals.

Supporters of the law say it is intended to protect women from unscrupulous practitioners; opponents say it's another step to outlaw abortions in the state. Ref. CNN
