Raised primarily by mother, Asha, as my father, Habel, was usually off fighting or hunting to help keep our village fed. He had determined while in my mother's womb my name would be a combination of his and hers as he believed this would instill in me both of their qualities. While my father was off to war I was birthed to my human parent's and given the name, Ashbel. Unfortunately, my father would never get to see his newborn son as he was killed in battle.
It was not uncommon in my village to be raised without a father as many others had also lost fathers to war. My mother was kind, loving, and nurturing, making sure I was trained by the elders in all aspects of life. I grew to be strong, intelligent, and knowledgeable to things of the spirit.
At the age of 16, I was 6'4" with a tan, muscular build. My striking blue eyes accentuated by my shoulder length dark brown hair. Considered handsome by the young ladies in the village with the confidence of my father, as my mother would often tell me.
There was a great celebration in the village on my 16th birthday to celebrate my becoming a man. I imagined what extraordinary things I might accomplish, and my journey would begin much sooner than I thought, as my mother died in her sleep that night leaving me orphaned.
Packing the few things I possessed, I headed into the unknow to make my mark on the world. I wish to follow the way of the Paladin, treating others how I wish to be treated. My mother instilled upon me respect, honor, honesty, compassion, justice, and a sense of duty. I will courageously go forth to be a light in the dark places, leaving the world better than I found it.
A Sentimental Value: Portrait of Mother
Before leaving my village and heading out into the unknown world, I held in my hand a portrait of my beautiful mother and stared at it lovingly. Her long brown hair accenting her soft features and the same blue eyes she had given to me. She had been my world and as I placed the portrait in my bag, I knew it would serve as a constant reminder of who I was and give me the courage I needed to live a life that would make her proud.
It was early evening as Ashbel sat in the tavern contemplating his next course of action. He watched as people came and went, watched as they sat, wondering what tales and adventures they told.
He immediately recognized the tall, rugged, and muscular captain as he walked through the tavern door, paused, and looked around as if searching for someone. Ashbel stood from his table and caught the attention of Gideon. With a smile and look of relief, Gideon strolled toward the table.
Placing his hands on Ashbel's shoulders he said, "Those at the village said you had made your way to the town. I am very sorry to hear of your mother's death. She was an incredible woman and raised you well."
"As you know, your father and I were like brothers, and when he was killed in battle, I took it upon myself to visit the village as often as I could. I hope the things I have taught you have prepared you for this unknown and dark world. I am here to aid you in any way that I can."
