Grammar, Spelling, Word Use. Help!

I actually speak very well. My grammar sucks and so does my spelling. I just don't see what other people see with it. I didn't really sart reading a lot till about 3 years ago. Now I have read quite a few books. I could hardly read at all when I was 12. I have taken measures on this with reading some "proper grammar books". I have also gotten a typing book and it has shown me how to type properly. I can almost type now without looking at the key board.

If anyone sees anything then I am open to constructive criticism. It is a skill I want to have now.

I am starting to get more political now and would desire constructive criticism.

I am not even an expert in my own language. I wouldn't normally ask for something but I have found some skills here in writing, thoughts and structure that I desire to have.

This is an open type of deal. In other words I wont attack what people think at all. I don't have a problem with criticism so much. I just like to fight. I wont fight on this thread. That is the number one rule for me here, so let me have it. I will follow this rule. What do you think? I promise no attack (I am good for it). Don't be a sissy!

Help Use Word Spelling Grammar

I haven't got a problem with anything that I've seen you put. If anything, I've seen improvement and confidence growing, you just tell it as it is, and I like that.

I used to struggle on this site at first, because the spell checker uses only the American spelling whereas us Brits spell quite a few different ways ie: colour, and neighbour.
In fact, I now write it the American way automatically, I just get in trouble when I write to a Brit. laugh.gif

FarSeer, is the human grammar and spelling specialist here so she is the most expert to help you. I can only relate based on the requirements of the Community.

Notice the word in bold. It is more about consistency than being an ace at English. Spell check is free. This is how I view it... if you want someone to take seriously what you (referring to anyone and not you as an individual) write then some basic things should be followed:

1. If you are going to start a sentence or a name then use an uppercase letter! I won't even answer someone that wrote "jean borde" for obvious reasons.

2. Spell check is free, so really there is no excuse to not use it. You can also start using FireFox which automatically highlights the words that are misspelled. Do people make typos, sure... one or two is OK right, but what about if it is five or ten, then it is considered sloppy?

3. Before you Post anything do give it at least a once over read! Nothing worst than having to approve every action Persephone wants to take just because the person did not check to see if they use the quote tags properly, etc.

4. There, their, dear, and so forth does not have much bearing for me... if I get what you meant to say I pass over it quickly, I think those are common grammatical errors, same with "Me and Her". Those things are not even bothered with here, but yes for the aforementioned.

5. Be descriptive. Smilies and net talk are a big turn off. I think they have their place at certain times, but it is better to really understand what you are saying. Could you imagine reading a novel with smilies in it to replace words that could describe the atmosphere.

Do I make every post properly --> NO, but am I likely to post properly --> YES. Thus, we have to watch patterns. Often I write, come across what I wrote sometime later and immediately start slapping myself in the face for critical "you should know better" mistakes and I edit them.

I also appreciate when people Email me (and I get them from time to time) saying "you said that wrong" or "you spelled that wrong". I am glad for the corrections because they are helping me not look like an idiot for attaching my name to something written terribly.

DianeC, please do feel free to use British spelling, I recognize it and so do Bots / Mods, however like you I ended up spelling using US English.

Help Use Word Spelling Grammar

Just a thought on why we adapt to the American spelling. I think it is due to the red line that appears in her Queens English when using Firefox. We are programmed in school to desire its removal; as it means we did something incorrectly.

Quasar I applaud your efforts and open honesty in this. I my self suffer greatly from being sloppy in my spelling and grammar use.

Here are the steps I should use every post and sometimes skip some. I have my son starting on them as well as he suffers from my inflictions. Thoughts racing faster then the hand can write them out is a major cause of this. So let the thoughts fly then go back and review individually the following.

1)Punctuation
2)Capitals
3)Spelling
4)Flow of thoughts
5)Sentence structure
6)repeat 1 to 3.

It seems like a ton of work but making these conscious steps becomes second nature in time. Hope it helps, I learned these steps in grade school thanks to a kind teacher who seen me struggling. Thanks MRS McKendrick man I despised her.

Grammar, Spelling, Word Use. Help!

I get your points and thanks. I would prefer PMs if it is not out of anyones way. I have noticed an improvement in speaking to people and a couple of short speeches I have given to some of the small rally groups I have attended. I am writing them out much better, and my debate skills seam to have gone up. I think they could be a lot better.

So if anyone sees anything please do tell. Believe it or not I several "read overs" with my posts.

Grammar Spelling Word Use. Help!

I have no doubts on that. The issue I find is a person sees what they write as OK. Our mind fills in missing words and it is hard to see ones own errors. I would also suggest for public debates or speeches have a friend proof for you. Especially one who does not think the same as you. Proof reading is a talent.

If I have any major ground breaking ideas I will PM you.
