I was watching a National Geographic documentary a couple of days ago that said the moon is spinning away from the earth slowly - about the rate of one inch per year. They gave some theories about the importance of the moon in orbit around us because it keeps the earth's axis from wobbling / changing. If the moon were to go too far away from the earth then a lot of areas of the earth would become desolate with either an ice age or desert. Therefore the moon's distance from the earth is very essential. Another point is that the moon causes the actual crust of the earth to rise about one foot (not noticeable by us) just as it does with the water (high tide).
