Action precedes today's summit with Calderón
On the eve of his summit with Mexican President Felipe Calderón in Mexico City today, Obama added the cartels to the list of banned foreign "drug kingpins," a move that empowers the federal government to seize any of their assets found in U.S. Jurisdictions. It also allows the government to seek criminal penalties against U.S. Firms or individuals who provide weapons, launder money or transport drugs or cash for the organizations. Ref. Source 9

The Mexicans are using these planes to carry a lot of drugs across the border. It is easy to fly, you can fly close to the surface to avoid detection and the amount of weight it can carry is significant. Drug dealers are getting more and more sophisticated.

Soldiers, gunmen battle in Acapulco
ACAPULCO, Mexico - Mexican soldiers waged an hours-long battle with heavily armed men holed up in a hillside mansion, killing 16 of the gunmen as Mexican tourists cowered in their rooms nearby. Two soldiers were killed in the clash. Ref. Source 9

Charles Bowden on Mexico's Dirty War Against Drugs
Last week Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy blocked the release of a State Department report affirming that Mexico has respected human rights in its fight against drug cartels. Leahy's move holds up more than $100 million in US aid. The money has been delayed under a law linking 15 percent of US funding to Mexico under the Merida Initiative to Mexico's record on human rights. On Monday, President Obama praised the Mexican government for its handling of the drug war.
