You do not need credits to play, you need turns. When you first create an army you are given a default number of turns, I believe it is 200 - 250. As you play the game you use up your turns. The game automatically renews your turns at the rate of 2 every 'x' minutes (check the very bottom of the control panel page to know what the rate is). If you want credits to get more turns or faster turn rate you can always donate.
