Hand-to-hand is rare in today's warfare.

Yeah, seems like most of it comes in the form of a bomb above.

What about the SEALS - I notice most movies portray their skill with knives. What is that called?

From Deseret News:

PURSUING THE MARTIAL ARTS
When you first begin iaido, you might not pay much attention to the concept of
blood. You'll be so focused on your breathing. You'll be thinking so hard about
firming your gaze, about where to place your feet, how to angle your hips and
your arms, about the sound the sword makes as it cuts the air.

From Deseret News:

HOW TO GET STARTED IN MARTIAL ARTS
Looking to get started in the martial arts? Wondering which one is best for you
or your child? Martial-arts experts would first ask you, "What is your goal?"

MULTITUDES OF MARTIAL ARTS ARE TAUGHT IN U.S.
There may be as many as 100 martial arts taught in the United States. What
follows is just a smattering. No matter which art you choose, you'll progress
more quickly if you attend class at least twice a week.

It's called Hollywood Ballyhoo.
Although the Special Forces of all branches do a lot of close-order training, that is more for conditioning than actual use.

If you can get close enough to a man to cut his throat, a .9mm round (with silencer) to the brain is far more efficient than trying to cut him.

I had a friend who was a San Dan in Shotokan who got the living **** kicked out of him by a DI

Good Ole Street Fighting! (not that it is good) Street fighting teaches you to expect the unexpected and give it all you got.

Not to mention the flying movements and the two hundred hits and punchest they have to take before they fall on the ground.

Sure but unless you are actually are at war and your gun is in hand it will be hard to defend yourself if all you know how to do is pull a trigger.

OH.
I thought that was what you were talking about when you said Special Ops.

Well, if it is a street situation, a knife would not likely be in your hand either- not that most don't carry them.

I wouldn't recommend taking on a guy who had military training AND a knife in his hand.

You would very likely wind up with a tracheotomy you could put a soda can in.

So are you saying that military hand to hand combat rivals those that learn the oriental art forms?

By no means.
Martial arts training, if learned under a qualified sensei, and practiced with dedication and discipline, is an unmatched form of unarmed self-defense.

Isn't it interesting that most of the styles thought today are from the Orient? I wonder why Western cultures never developed their own to the same standard? I do know the Brazilians have a style that is very popular, but it requires very acrobatic movements.
