Mechanic! - Page 2

As a mechanic I can sympathise with your experiences. I have worked in several garages, large & small, not all as honest as some. It is very frustrating working in a place where you seem to be the only person who actually cares. The establishment I work in now is a small family business, with a good reputation, we pride ourselves on being very straitforward people. We have many female and male customers, who feel comfortable with us. I could tell you some real horror stories about some of the places I have worked, the main problem is bonus schemes & sales commission based bonuses. By keeping the basic wage very low they can ensure you will do your utmost to get as much money out of the unfortunate customer as is humanly possible.
It took me a long time to find a garage I was comfortable working in, I do have a conscience, poor workmanship/standards really boils my blood. At the end of the day, we have a reputation as being "greasemonkies" (a term which I despise), yet in a lot of cases we are the only option for people. In a world where safety should be paramount, unfortunately it isn't. Money is the biggest motivation for a lot of people out there, sure we all have to live, but not at the expense of everyone else.
I apologise for my little rant, I always get carried away when I am passionate about something.
