A month passes quietly as you all wait for your items to be prepared for you. During this time you hear of a possible band of Gnolls raiding in the south on the border of the kingdom with a great desert. People also say there are other things in the desert that makes one not want to venture too far into it.

You find that the maps of the desert are not very detailed just shows a area of desert. You can see from the maps that no one claims the desert area it is known as a lawless land.

Traveling by horse it is a three week journey. Hiring a driver that has some fighting experience will cost you 3 gold a day. Otherwise a normal driver will charge 1 gold a day but will not travel south of the last town which is still a week from the border. Most of the detailed maps you find are of the kingdom you are in with the bottom edge marking the border with the desert with little or no space between the edge of the map and the southern border with just simple text stating " DESERT" There is a bit of wild land between the last settlement to the south and the border with a very small village about half way between catering solely to the farmers and tree cutters who live on the edge of the civilized areas.

The kingdom will provide you with the items to make a more detailed map of the wastelands. They will buy the map from you for 5 gold once completed due to them supplying the materials needed to make a better map. As you make your way south people can not you much about the gnoll raiders mainly due to it not effecting them. Once you make the last town they can tell you that while it was not often that they raided they are getting bolder and thus more frequent.

There is not that many scouts that go very far into the desert. The Gnolls always come from the desert and head back into it afterwards. There is one scout that tells you he has gone about ten miles into the desert and back he can take you into the desert but it will cost you 5 gold a day.

After the scout is hired and you have prepared everything you start the journey that will bring you to the frontier town that is halfway between the town you are in and the desert. Knowing that you may get a lot more information about the Gnolls activity It is three days to this small farming community and then three days beyond that is the edge of the maps and the start of the desert.

The smaller town can not tell you much more about the Gnoll activity just that they come from the desert and head back that way after raiding. So far they have only taken food and other goods but people fear it is just a matter of time before they take people. The one gnoll they happened to kill seemed well fed and in good condition.

As you leave the town and head into the desert I will need a marching order. I take it you will have the scout ahead of you? How far ahead?

You cross into the desert and head deeper as the scout leads you. You are going due south and the temperature is rising quickly. Those of you in metal armor will find that you are getting hot fast. You see nothing but barren land ahead of you as the desert shows no signs of life. The ground is rocky and the wagon is moving along easily for now.
During the night you find the air cools quickly causing you to shiver some from the rapid change of temperatures.
The next day comes with the sun starting to heat the desert quickly again. Those with exposed skin and metal armor will find they feel thirst quickly.
