Rumour now is that Kim Jong Il has pancreatic cancer. Check out the picture in this article...

He has lost a LOT of weight in the last few months. That does coincide with either the diabetes or the cancer as they both would lead to weight loss. The article also suggest that Kim Jong Il is hoping to remain in power until 2012 so that he can turn over the reigns to one of his sons at the anniversary of his father's establishment of N. Korea.

I am a South Korean citizen.
Domestically, there have been some conflicts between people who are conservative and people who are liberal. In South Korea, being conservative means abhoring North Korea and being liberal means recognising North Korea as a partner. The current Lee administrative branch is a kind of conservative type.
Also recently, there has been fear of another Korean War which ended in 1953.
I personally am a liberal person and I do recognise North Korea as a potential partner for the South. I do not believe that North Korea is trying to attack the Southern part of the peninsula, U.S or Japan because I firmly insist that the North does all those stuffs due to their inner political problems. By the way, do you really think that North Korea should be blamed for what they do? I really doubt if there is any need to do so. US, UK, PRC, French Republic and some other powerful nations also do nuke tests and have nuclear weapons. Someone might argue that there is a high possibility of North Korea exporting its nuke technology or nuke weapons to terrorists. However, the thing is that Pakistan also has some amount of nuke and the country is suspected of helping some terrorist militants with few blames from international community. There is no proof that North Korea exported such "dangerous" things. There are also no criticisms against the nuke tests performed in Britain, US, Russia and other countries like PRC and India. Military action is part of soverignty. Given this fact, why should we blame the country for their soverign actions?
Bu Seop, I believe you are more linking conservatism and liberalism directly to embracing the "sunshine policy" of the previous 2 S. Korean administrations. Conservatives believe that the "sunshine policy" was to generous over the last 2 administrations and that the good will that S.Korea has shown has not be met in kind by N.Korea and that Kim Jong Il is taking advantage of the generosity of the S.Korean people. The late President Roh took the "sunshine policy" to extremes and that N.Korea would annually get food, aid, technology and get nothing in return. The conservatives are saying enough is enough. Show us that you are truly interested in being a partner and the aid, food and technology will flow. If you don't...we will wait for that day. Kim Jong Il has been used to just getting S.Korean handouts and basically has budgeted for them and is a bit upset that his annual aid is being interrupted. Conservatives to not abhor N.Korea, but they do abhor N.Korea's abuse of S.Korea's genuine desire for reunification.
Conservatives in S.Korea are more friendly to business and growing the economy. Liberals in S.Korea are less friendly to business and more interested in individual rights against big business. There is also a bent towards advanced education for conservatives with a downplaying of advanced education and those that hold degrees from the liberal base.
N.Korea should absolutely be responsible for their actions. They are a grown up sovereign country and are to be held responsible for their actions. Now you can argue that we should not be allowed to determine if they have nukes or not, but the fact is that since 1980 N.Korea has taken money promising not to have a program. They had a program and succeeded in making a nuke...but they took that money, aid and technology. They lied to the world. They are to be held responsible. Want to keep your program...don't take the money...do what Iran is doing.
The countries you have listed have stopped nuclear testing as part of a agreement to do so. Did they test? Yes, absolutely, but they have agreed to do so no further. Again, they did not take money, aid and accept technology not to have a nuclear program. N.Korea did! Also, you are wrong that there are no complaints about any nuclear testing from large countries. There are formal complaints for nearly every test that has been carried out.
N.Korea has repeatedly blackmailed the world with the threat of a nuclear program unless the world gives them food, aid and technology. Since 1980, the world has given in... Today, wise people are finally waking up and seeing that all of N.Korea's promises were lies. The money they saved in feeding their own people were put to trying and split the atom.
You may defend this and call it liberalism if you want, but the truth is that you haven't had a friend to the north in a long time. Will they attack S.Korea? Probably not unless they desire defeat. China saved N.Korea last time, but they wont come to the rescue this time. They have too much of a financial interest in the US now. Russia wont help...they are too busy drilling oil. No, they wont invade S.Korea. This is all in preparation to move a new leader into the lead seat in N.Korea.
