Super Or Sinister

Super or Sinister

What are your thoughts about the RPG supplement "Super or Sinister"?

international QUOTE
Super or Sinister is a supplemental mechanic for use with the D20 System (usually for Dungeons & Dragons or D20 Modern games) that allows the use of Superheroes. This supplemental mechanic was created by members of the Quilt City Ogres.

Many Dungeons & Dragons enthusiast have always wanted to play a D&D game with Superheroes. The thought of using superhuman abilities to save the day (or enslave the people), without having to learn an entirely new game, is truly an enticing idea. Sadly, it would be impossible to truly incorporate most superhero archetypes and possibilities into a Dungeons & Dragons game without having to at least learn some new rules and mechanics. Ref. Sinister Super

While I can see the potential market share and potential suitability of the D20 system AT ITS BASIC LEVEL, the idea of adapting D&D to a superhero game is beyond implausible.

Feats, skills, attributes, special abilities - they're all ALREADY a big fat hairy mess at the basic 3.5 or 4 level, but add in superhero dynamics and player-created superpowers, and still the requirement of the D&D DM and Player's guide AND MONSTER MANUAL (?!) make this a laughable and extremely expensive avenue for newbies - any game that absolutely requires three or more books are very much on the edge of unacceptable for me, and I'm not fond of two.

Either you present a game in your book, or you don't. MAYBE a Player and a GM book to keep things full and separated for each, sure, and additional OPTIONAL books for settings, monsters, magic, classes, etc. But not required - this is purely a money scheme, and not that we expect companies to NOT try to make money off of us, but we don't have to fall prey to blatant piecemealing, where fewer but more expansive single volumes would be far superior, for player use.

Overall, a bad idea, and the phrase from this page, "The thought of using superhuman abilities to save the day (or enslave the people), without having to learn an entirely new game, is truly an enticing idea." is the saddest part, because if you're going to go to a whole different genre of game, you really want to go with one suited to it and which is, as a bonus, also a BETTER SYSTEM.
