What is your strategy for confronting the creature Squid in Dungeons & Dragons?

I didn't know squid was so agressive that some like fear them more than sharks even. I'm think this is the smaller squid though and not the giant one because the numbers for it are small.

I find the easiest way to stay away from squids is to not go close to the water. If you are on a ship that is attacked by a squid having a magic user on board with a fireball is a good thing.
