
It seems to me that the discussion about philosophy vs. religion and politics is not really a valid argument at all.
Religion and politics are both subsets of the umbrella subject of philosophy. They are both specialized, and at the same time expanded beyond the basic ideas of philosophy, but they are still essentially parts of it.
While it is very nice to study and understand some of the various disciplines of philosophy, the whole subject is so large and has so many different elements, that it is very easy to get completly lost within it. Since it is so large, many people get focused on one aspect or element, and then become dogmatic about that one part, never beginning to learn about other parts.
Of course, since religion, politics, economics, and a host of other disciplines are also offshootes of philosophy, the same problems lie within them.
Overall, I agree mostly with JB on this discussion, only because simple comprehension almost seems to be a lost art sometimes. Other than that, I agree with dubhdara, as religion and politics have the greatest effect upon mankind.
