Happy with your system?

Are you happy with your current computer system? What kind is it? Do you think it is worth spending extra dollars to have just a little more speed or a few more gigs of space?

I could do with a little bit more speed on mine.  I have a Compaq Presario with a Windows ME platform.  But I have invested much money into upgrades and I'm also looking to upgrading from ME to XP.  Just not sure, if I want to do that right now or wait a little bit longer.  Mainly, because I finally got my puter set up the way I need it.

What is the speed of your computer and kind of CPU? The thing I do not like about Compaq is it is hard to upgrade and use non name brand parts.

You know, it's been a while since I had to look for that info on my puter.  ;)  lol  But as far as I know, I have a Intel®Celeron™ Processor GenuineIntel 633 Mhz

I looked and I couldn't find the info on about the CPU.  But then again, it has been a while since I had to find that.  ;)  I will look again later for it, though.  :)

I am really wanting to upgrade my windows platform to XP, but everyone tells me that it takes up alot of memory on the puter for it.  The computer loads things slow for me.  I keep it tweaked and perform all the maintenance tasks to it, but it still seems slow.  But I have noticed that since I installed Norton Antivirus software on my puter, it takes longer to load pages, even when I am not online.  I don't know if it's the antivirus program slowing my puter down, or if it really needs speeding up, but it seems too slow to me.

I know this is a response to an old post ~ So if you haven't gone to XP yet, you might not want to. I have XP and my neighbor has ME. Mine is slower than his. Even with DSL, XP is still slower than ME. ANd according to MS Tech Help, this is normal for XP. I have gotten used to it ~ it is faster than Win 95 though.

When I installed Norton, everything slowed down too. So I called MS Help and they had me uninstall Norton, uninstall McAfee(which came with the 'puter), then reinstall Norton. At the same time I had them help me to remove all the other added stuff: the shareware/freeware junk that came with the computer. This gave me more speed and memory. I am NOT really computer literate ~ but as much as I dislike MS, their Tech help guy was great!

That would probably equal to a pentium 450 mhz. Celerons were never known for speed or workload. I am actually surprised that they made it so far. LDS' computer is a Celeron 900 Mhz and it is down now smile.gif-->rolleyes.gif

That is why I am still with ME! Also Norton is a complete waste of money and resources.

However, not to dwell on operating systems, but rather the system itself... I have used the 2.2Ghz computers but see little difference between it and the 1.2 Ghz computers.

I have an AMD Athlon 1000 Mhz with 640 MB ram and I really cannot complain. It does all I need it to do. It is a great clone and I have got more out of it than I did with any name brand stuff.

Happy your system

I'm running a 4 year old e-machine - 533 Celeron processor, and I just upgraded from 64MB of RAM to 128MB. Woo hoo! We're speedy now laugh.gif But as cheap as the upgrade was, I think I'll get another 128MB chip for 256MB. I remember the days when RAM chips cost about $10 per MB. Now I'm getting 128 for about $40. Talk about deflation...

Hey I'm still running Win98...and I just saw an article that MS is not going to support it anymore sad.gif

I also just got a "new" monitor. My old monitor had only about 13" of viewing area ... grrr!! pain in the neck.... At work the boss is upgrading everyone to flat panel monitors, so he's going to have a dozen or more "old" monitors laying around. I asked if I could buy one and he gave it to me. I now have 16 viewable inches. What a difference!!!

I am still using an old Compaq 14" monitor sad.gif With regards to the ram, check Ebay, ram at that size should be much cheaper than what you are getting it for. Even in trinidad 128 MB is only US$18. I got 530MB ram on ebay for US$30 once, still working on my current computer.
