Woman sues church & ex-bishop

SALT LAKE CITY - A Utah County woman is suing the LDS Church and her former bishop for injuries she sustained when she fell from a zip line in her bishop's backyard. In a lawsuit filed in 3rd District Court, Martha Miller claims that on Sept. 22, 2008, she attended an activity for members of her BYU singles ward at the home of her bishop, Kyrt Nay. Ref. Source 2

So basically this woman wants the church to pay for her stupidity? This is the most ridiculous claim I have heard in a while you know what am I saying? As far as I know nobody put a gun on this sister's head and forced her to do what she did.

My question is how bad were her injuries and whether or not she was active? I would also like to know if it would be okay to have people sign waivers before doing anything dangerous.

I think that she must be blaming the peer pressure influencing her to do it. She always had the choice to say no but she decided to do it.

If she was unsure of its safety then she had the chance to say no.

It is interesting that the news source says "Former Bishop" since it has happened has she left the church she belonged to.

If it was a genuine accident why doesn't she just let her insurance or whatever handle it why like sue the church?

It seems more than extreme to be suing the church and the ex Bishop for something that she had a choice over as to whether she took part or not.
It would be a shame if some of these activities are cut out of church life for fear of being sued.

I never liked having activities at the home of members even if its the bishop. When you're in someone's home you're sort of restricted to the limits of their home and whatever way they do things. I think official church activities should either be like in a public place or the chapel.
