Gethsemane & Golgotha

Here you may share your views and understanding of the purposes of Gethsemane & Golgotha. Gethsemane was a place of suffering for Christ and so was Golgotha (where he was crucified). What do you recognize as the purpose of the suffering at these two places? Were they for different things? Was the suffering more intense in the Garden or on the Cross?

Now I warn you, references are to be ONLY from the Bible. LDS Members, there is a Discussion about this in the 'Focus on Christ' Board. I will not tolerate straying with other off topic comments, etc.

Golgotha and Gethsemane

The suffering of Gethsemane and Golgotha was symbolic of both mental and physical suffering that christ went through. Gethsemane was the emotional and mental anguish of realizing your own future and death and pain. It was the final choice, with all the chips on the table, knowing what had to happen, but knowing he could turn and save himself. It was the final realization that there was no other way, he was born to die.

Golgotha is an easier suffering to see. He was tortured and crucified then died. While this usually focused on more, I think it was the easier to deal with. I say this because all physical suffering has an end and he knew when that end would come. I think that the time leading up to the physical would have been more excruciating, like waiting to get a finger chopped off, knowing its going to happen. But once it had begun, it was the beginning to the end of it.

Traversing through both mental/emotional agony allows him to see and feel both sides of human pain and suffering.
