KN,

There will always be poor but we can try to break the cycle and give people a better chance to rise. In my mind, breaking the cycle means providing a way out for present and future generations. It does not mean ending poverty. If we don't break the cycle it becomes endemic poverty, from generation to generation, and that is insensitive and dangerous. Breaking the cycle allows future generations hope.

I have always been surprised that America can have so much poverty even though there is so much land open, plenty jobs and education.

US Poverty History & Civil Business Politics

I can assure you we do not have plenty of jobs, at least not where they need to be. It is getting to where the only business suitable for unskilled labor that is not mainly based overseas is retail and food. Jobs that previously had been the realm of college students supplementing their income are now overflooded with people trying to make a living out of them.

We do have plenty of land, but its all owned, and our education system is the laughing stock of the civilized world, and continually getting worse.

Then why America will put itself as first in the world and the best of everything and still not have basic problems fixed.

Inertia. Newton's first law applies nearly as well to social and political matters as it does to physical object

There was a time when America was arguably near or at the top of the lists when it came to things like industry, science and education. Thing is, we've stopped improving, or even started declining, in those areas some time ago while the rest of the world marches on.

In the meantime, the kids who grew up hearing their parents boast about America being the best at everything are now the idiots in charge of this mess. They don't see a problem because they don't want to admit there is one, and so the problems don't get fixed.

Okay, fair enough, there's more to it than that, but that is a big part of the issue.

I do not want to offend but what you are saying confirms that its true, America is not very smart and the people are only thinking about now and not the future which makes poverty, crime and a loss of employment in better paying jobs.

No matter how smart a country is or how they try to combat poverty you will always have a few who do not want to work and turn to life of crime as a easy way out. Therefore you will always have poverty. Here in the United Stated even those in poverty live much better than others who are in poverty through out the rest of the world.

Yeah, and not all resort to crime. Some have other issues that drive them to poverty. Like some of our returning soldiers with PTSD and no idea how to cope with it until they eventually end up on the street. Also, what Daishain said is so true. We are having a hard time actually facing the truth of where we are. In WW 2 we were called the arsenal of democracy. We launched hundreds of ships, many the largest of their time, a hundred thousand planes, and nearly that many tanks. This doesn't mention the artillery pieces, trucks, jeeps, amphibious vehicles, rifles, and ammunition needed to field a modern army. Our Army grew from 100,000 to many millions. And we did this in 3 1/2 years. If we tried to do that today it would 33 1/2 years I fear. We need to rebuild our industrial base, we need to get our debt under control, and we need to start thinking of the country rather than of ourselves.
