Yes I think that Chan and Zen are basically the same sort.

The difference is that Chan was developed and practised in China where as Zen came from Japan.

So yes the same style with different names I think.

Interesting. Are these two groups vegetarian? I was convinced that Buddhism supported vegetarian lifestyle which they do but it seems to be more an issue of personal choice.

I think a lot of diets in religions are fading. I personally am not a vegetarian nor have I heard of it being a requirement of the Buddhist religion. You may be right about them supporting a vegetarian lifestyle, although I am not certain.

Even in Christian churches they have stopped the whole "no meat on Friday(etc)" hogwash. So perhaps vegetarianism could have also been a part of Buddhism once upon a time.

Comments: Chan is the ancestor of Zen. Although often regarded as the Chinese equivalent of Zen, there are now exist some differences between to the two. After being brought to Japan, this particular school of Buddhism became less strict in the sense that people who were not monks and nuns were allowed to teach the Dharma (teachings of Buddhism), whereas in the Chinese Chan schools, this was and is frowned upon - even to this day. Among practitioners, Chan is often now regarded as more "orthodox," and Zen is more often regarded as a branch of Chan instead of its equivalent.
