Such traditions, that we stigmatize as barbaric (and indeed they are), are deeply rooted in the culture and tradition of those populations to the point that the very victims of the mutilations don't perceive themselves as such. I remember my government struggling to enforce the laws that forbid this practice inside the communities of immigrants. Most of the women were at least reluctant to spare their daughters from the mutilations because they were not ready to face the social consequences. Once back to their countries, a non-mutilated woman would not be able to find a husband and would be forced to become a prostitute to mantain herself.
