Mom allows 5 year old son to walk to school alone

This is the most disturbing and frustrating stories I have read in a while. Please read it and even though I understand that she tried to get the child into the school bus. Etc what it frustrates me and angers me the most is that even though SHE CAN, meaning she is ABLE to drive her kid to school, she rather him to walk A MILE unsupervised, crossing busy streets, etc and based on that article the ONLY frustration isn't the fact that he could be killed or kidnapped but the fact that this police citation she was given could stop her from being a Girl Scout Leader or work at a day care! She just doesn't seem to get it!

international QUOTE
SOUTH JORDAN -- With an orange vest and careful instructions from his mother, 5 ½-year-old Noah Talbot makes his way home from school at noon each day by himself.

The kindergartner at Monte Vista Elementary School in South Jordan usually walks with his older brother every morning, but he comes home alone since his class only meets for half a day. Last Friday, Noah was on his way to school when he was stopped by a South Jordan police officer. The officer picked him and drove him home.

The officer then issued his mother, Rosella Talbot, a citation for misdemeanor child neglect, saying it was irresponsible for her to allow her young son to walk from school unaccompanied.

"I am not a neglectful parent, thank you very much," she told the Deseret News. "I have just done everything I could possibly do."

....Noah crosses two streets in order to get home, one of which is a busy 2700 West. His mom worries about it, but said she has tried to make the circumstances as safe as possible. So it was especially frustrating when police officer Elyse Charter showed up at her house, issued her a citation and took her fingerprints.

According to the officer's report, Charter was concerned about the cold weather and "became increasingly alarmed by the sheer number of vehicles traveling on 2700 West."

Noah caught the officer's eye when she saw him being followed by a gold-colored van. After speaking with the driver, Charter learned that the driver had seen the boy walking 30 minutes earlier and was afraid he was lost.

Charter wrote in her report that Noah had been stopped by another officer in March after spotting him walking alone to preschool. There are no sidewalks for about half of the boy's daily trek.

Talbot has a younger child at home and an older child with cerebral palsy, and while she said she could drive Noah from school, she would rather he walk and walk safely.

There are some real crazy parents out there, what are they thinking or not thinking for that matter? She needs to be checked out for sanity or insanity. That gold colored van might have been his ride to a missing persons poster, stupid woman.

What it gets on my skin is the fact that she said she did everything she possibly could...how is that if she claims she CAN drop him from school but CHOOSES not to because she wants him to "get exercise"? Are you freaking kidding me? A 5 year old in cold weather walking a MILE with heavy traffic at times? Some of the neighbors are even saying they OFFERED to drop him to school and she has declined! But what the heck is wrong with this woman? I don't want to think she intentionally wants something to happen to this child because her behavior is FAR from being LOGICAL.

Comments: Just so everyone sees the true story, she is not neglecting her kids if you knew her she doesn't have life so easy try walking in her shoes and then express your opinion! It is upsetting for people to say anything about her when there are many children walking even farther to this school. I would pick up her son if it made a difference. Please give her the courtesy of really reading what she goes through in a day. She is a wonderful mother and loves her kids.

Wait a second...I live here in Utah, do you realize how cold it is right now? This isn't an issue of whether she's a good mom or has struggles (I know for a fact she has a kid with special needs) however it doesn't change the fact that she said that she could drive him to school and chooses (key word: chooses) or the fact neighbors offered and she refused because she wants him to get some exercise...now you go ahead and explain me that reasoning taking into consideration that the kiddo is a preschooler and is winter time! (I am ALL ears).

You mean five year old kids walking ALONE in the middle of winter for more than a mile? If so, you should report them to the police.

I really didn't get the first sentence, so what does she need? She cant get a bus...FINE, then drop your kid! Or let someone else drop him for you! If the issue is one of trust towards her neighbors its crazy because for one side she may not trust them but she trusts the poor kid walking alone for a mile and becoming "prey" for a pedophile or other sickos out there who may be watching the fact he is not being supervised...it's almost like, Hello? Is she waiting for a disaster to take place?

It angers me to be honest but hey I am all ears for the reasoning behind her actions and I hope it's not the fresh air/exercise one because if it is, then she needs a psychologist.

I hope when she appears in court, the Judge can teach a lesson here because those who defend her are forgetting something, if she gets away with it it will mean that any other mother with a child of a similar age can do what she did without fear of being persecuted can you all see the ramifications of such thing?
