[medieval] The Escort - Page 3

The Game Master says...

Kettle says, "Light up every corner, please. Let's explore this 'mud hut on boulders' to see what's what, before we go charging off half-crazy."

LaReina raises the torch.

The door is hard wood and its corners are reinforced with steel and studs to prevent crushing or picking, in fact you see no space going to the outside, everything seems calculated about it compared to the rest of your surroundings which is very disorganized and in bad need of house keeping.

You have a listen at the door, but it is so thick that you can hardly hear anything, you are not sure but you think you hear horses, but then that would be obvious. You look for hinges and notice there are none, or at least they are not seen in the inside, you begin to wish you had looked at the outside better before you came in, but your long journey got the better of you. You now wonder if the old man outside realizes that you are stuck inside. You think for a moment and then wonder if he is not part of the reason you are inside this minature prison.

You try to gain composure and look around. In the room (10'x10') ou see a bed that is badly made with a pillow on top with no cover. Next to the bed is a small table and two chairs made out of wood and badly put together. At the other end of the room seems to be a trap door leading below ground, next to the trap door is a spiral staircase made of hard wood that leads up to where you saw the small hole and a possible first floor, but you are not sure what to make of it from your position.

The place is well enclosed and seems to be more of a jail than a living quaters.

LaReina, Alex, Heric and Kettle journey up the stairs but soon realize that the wood can only support one. It circles to about eighteen feet at the top and there is only a 2'x3' landing just enough for one person to peer through a whole about 6"x3". This looks like a vantage point for an archer and not a window. LaReina looks outside in haste to see the position of the wagons.

"They are leaving! They are Leaving!"

Shouts LaReina as she now calls out the teamster with shouts and cursings, but the teamster pays her no mind. LaReina's low sould and mind causes her to jump up and down frantic with panic while everyone wonders what is going on below. Alex decides to climb the stairs to clam LaReina and you feel the wood begin to creek and shake.

It is too dark to see anymore details but you do notice that both the wagon you travelled on and Kettle's horse are still tied up outside.

As you stand pondering your next move you feel the presence of a cold chill, the kind you get when you feel a flu, disease or sickness coming on. You feel that to stand and ponder any longer may result in some bad omen.

The Game Master says...

Alex and LaReina get back to the ground floor cautiously to avoid breaking the stairs. By this time LaReina is more calm than before, but still edgy.

Heric searches the bed and finds a key under the pillow. The key looks old, slightly rusted and seems to be for some kind of door or chest. Its' design seems classical in nature, something that only a rich person would use to enter their home. The rest of the room does not present anything significant except that someone has been there before.

Heric and LaReina venture over to the trap door inspecting it, proding with their swords and when they feel it is reasonably safe they try to open it with one end of their weapons while everyone stands back.

The trap door opens with a loud squeak and falls to one end of the floor. A cool draft enters the room and you feel that chill stronger than before. You wait about 10 seconds to see if anything happens and then peer down to see a ladder going down about 12' to what seems to be a cave like bottom floor, beyond that you cannot see much more unless you start to climb down the ladder.

Page 3 Escort medieval

The Game Master says...

Heric takes the key and puts it in a safe place, possibly under his clothes near his belly button. He says,

"I guess through the trapdoor we go, no turnin' back now"

Holding the torch and looking at everyone LaReina shrugs and announces,

"I'll go down first, don't worry about me I can handle myself"

"Slow down Reina" kettle begins.

"Use the torch to carefully light up the tunnel, and go slowly down the ladder".

LaReina goes down the ladder while looking for anything that could make blood spill. After that little fright she reaches to the bottom and describes what she sees as the rest of you peer from above.

LaReina relays that there is not much room as a door blocks the way, a door similar to the one that locked you in. The ground, walls and cieling are all rock and it seems like some kind of under ground cave.

Alex, Heric, and Kettle decide to climb down to the bottom.

Escort medieval

The Game Master says...

LaReina goes closer to the door and inspects it with caution as she has a strange feeling that a trap may be waiting for them somewhere. She finds nothing. Heric follows up as well and finds nothing also. They try to open it but find that it is locked. They use the key that was found...

'Click', 'Click' 'Clock'... it opens!

You shine the light down what seems to be a corridor of a cave. It sways to the left and then to the right until you cannot see anymore. The sides top and bottom are all of the same look and feel as where you are now, this is a cave indeed.

"Kettle, if this torch I have begins to go out, light another one please", LaReina says.

Kettle who is of average intelligence and yet unwise still responds that the torch will give two hours of light and so they have nothing to fear at the moment.

Alex, an extremely unwise brute thinks it an opportune time to say, "You should know that LaReina, where were you brought up, behind the Village stables?"

LaReina does not like the sound of that and pushes Alex by putting her hands on his chest and shoving him back.

"Want to play eh?" replies Alex, a brute indeed.

The Game Master says...

Heric looking at the ensuing fight becomes rigid and exclaims,

"Calm down, the both of you! Remember we have to stay focused on what we're doing. There is no time for that here."

"Humpf! Some people just can't stand a joke... I'm sorry anyway, let's move on"

Replies Alex, yet worried about what an angry warrior could do with a sword on hands.

"We should stay about 3-4 feet apart as we move down the hallway just to be safe. We can also search for hidden doors as we go", Heric says, and the others agree with him.

You move ahead making each step seem like an eternity in darkness. You do not wish to die young and you have found that such caution can never be over exaggerated. You arrive at the edge of the water and shine your torch. This is some sort of huge cavern, you can barely see the cieling which is not even visible to the light of your torch. You see water about one foot deep surrounding an area 12 feet ahead of you and continuing to your left. Ahead the room continues. You can barely make out what is ahead but you see some kind of chain on a wall to the north of where you are. The outline of the room takes shape. (see map)

The Game Master says...

You dip your finger into the water and raise it out so that a few droplets can be put on your tongue. You taste and think to yourself (low wisdom)... 'It ain't ale, but it tastes just like water'. You see that the water is stagnant and stale. it seems drinkable as you have not died yet, or at least do not hope to.

You cross the water and kick up the dirt beneath which now makes the water cloudy and brown in the section you are in. You place your palms on the wall of the cave, moving ever so close as though it were your blood line.

Those of you who do not have hard leather booths will have wet feet, if that is a good thing or not you do not know. You make it across safely or at least all your limbs seem to be still intact and you shine your torch into the air hoping to see more.

The chains that hang from the wall seem to be set apart just enough to keep a humanoid in prison. They are a bit rusty, but you can tell that they have not long been used since they smell of sweat and blood.

Next to the chains is a curious symbol that seems to smell of great evil. You watch as white sand sets the lines and melted candles once lit, now act as statues around it. It seems to be some kind of sacrificial place! Your heart beats and you start looking around frantically as though you are being watched. You envision yourself in those chains for some reason and the thought makes you chill to the bone. (see symbol below)

The rest of the room is more apparent. You look over at the other end of the room and see three distinct exits all similar in nature and just as dark. the water takes up about half of this cave room which is about 50' x 60'. To one end, high in the cieling and far above you can just make out a small hole, just enough for birds to fly through. The only thing that made the hole known to you is the moon light above shinning in and on to the water below.
