Out of Character: The way I see it there are two choices... Uhura dies because a vampire bit her to death or someone shot her while trying to help. Uhura wouldn't want to be a vampire so don't be scared to shoot, even if you miss at least you tried.

In Character: Major doesn't have time to way the odds but seeing the zombie on top of Uhura like that makes his trigger finger even more itchy. Major fires almost with his eyes closed hoping for the best.
