Yeh, Alana, thats what i mean by mask. Your definition is perfect, although really we can all have our own definition. What we/I mean by being ourselves thru a mask is...sometimes..the mask is put only a part of the grand portrait, and when all the masks are fitted together, only then can we see the true person. That was an idea i had, but your absolutly right about the relationship, its the very thing i tell people. Im glad u see that.

The purpose of a mask is not just to disguise and hide tho. There are many uses for a mask. Maybe one carries a mask to...entertian, or uses a mask to grasp a higher level of understanding or...(a lower one)...or..perhaps a status or position..in society? A mask is so many things to so many different people. I guess we all just have to decide what our masks our...and figure our..if they are bad or not.

So you think that the different pieces add up to the whole person. Is that it? I guess you're right too. Masks mean different things to different people.
If I used your analogy of the different pieces as being part of a grand portrait I would look at it as giving small pieces of yourself to different people. Meaning...you hold back part of yourself, never giving everything.
Personally I think that masks aren't good. Sometimes I use them but ultimately most people figure out the real me over a period of time. It can be draining though.
Do you study psychology?

Im saying many different maks Can make up a person, im just trying to show u different possibilites. I personally tend to think of a mask as a...tool..or a defence..others (usualy the ones with the most..used masks..) tell me that the mask amekes up the person. i dont believe that. I agree, a mask is bad-but we all have them. It is hard to figure a person out fi they are lying to themselves and others..i guess thats all a mask is..a lie.

No i dont study psycology, but i plan too, i can do that until 11th grade, and you?

You do seem to have a good analysis of psychological issues and you seem genuinely interested in people. You should study it, well at least until you figure out what you want to do with your life in terms of a career. Its helps in your relationships with people, not to mention, you can figure out more about you.
I have a degree in it but I didn't want to go further. I'm not using it in my career but it has helped me tremendously and still does.

I am actually writing a book about this called Identity Suicide. I think that all of us do wear masks at some point in our lives. Some of us longer than others.

I've created the term 'identity suicide' (its my term!) and it means to kill who you are intentionally, even if it is for a short period of time.

When people wear these masks they are performing identity suicide. Some of us are discouraged to and dont. I am glad I am one of them. I do what I want to do, and dont let other peoples opinions change the way I am. Unfortunately some people do, so I agree, we do wear masks, all of us, but some of us are lucky enough to be able to take them off, and some of us are just too consumed in media and what other people think.

Well let me post a question. How can i commit indentity suiside if i dont truely know who i am? You say when a person puts on a mask, that person kills their own identity. What is it then if one does not truely know who 'themself' is?

I like your term, ^_^ its very interesting. I hope your book is published one day, i would love to read it.

What do you mean you don't know who you are? How can that be? Although we all wear masks, I think if we honestly look at ourselves and really evaluate our beliefs and feelings, we will know what is a mask and what is truly us. I also think our masks change as we go through different stages of life.
