SourceBan on Local Women Singers Lifted
Tue January 13, 2004 09:20 AM ET

KABUL (Reuters) - More than two years after the fall of the hardline Islamic Taliban regime, state television has broadcast for the first time footage of an Afghan woman singing.
The broadcast late on Monday will be seen as another small victory for moderate democrats led by President Hamid Karzai over religious conservatives opposed to many of the changes that have swept Kabul since the Taliban's collapse.

Kabul Television used old footage of Parasto, a well-known singer who now lives in the West, performing without a headscarf.

"We are endeavoring to perform our artistic works regardless of the issue of sex," Information and Culture Minister Sayed Makdoom Raheen told Reuters on Tuesday, when asked about the lifting of a ban on the broadcasting of women singing.

The ban has been in place since 1992, when the "Mujahideen," Or holy warriors, came to power and fought factional battles that reduced much of Kabul to rubble and claimed tens of thousands of lives.

I think it's interesting that this is a "Back page" News item... What Reuters terms "Odd" News. Seems to me this is a significant event in the region.

Well they have been mentioning bits and pieces of reform in Afghanistan, but people never are interested in good news as compared to the bad, so all the media goes for what people want. Afghanistan is now able to feed its population --> boring, US helicopter crashes and 6 die --> news, that is how it is, sad, but true.

Yes, it is a sad commentary on the collective thirst for the "scoop" the "dish" the "gossip" -- it's gotta be titillating, scintillating, scandalous, or it's not interesting.

I also heard that American newspapers are going to drop their "readability" index again to 6th grade level instead of 12th grade. Further dumbing down of the populace.

Well, at least now they have their own constitution.

USA Afghanistan

December 7, 2004

Today, just three years after America helped overthrow the Taliban, Hamid Karzai was inaugurated as the first democratically elected leader of Afghanistan. It is a truly remarkable transformation in a country that suffered under an incredibly repressive regime. But have things changed for everyone?

One can't help but be struck by the pictures from Afghanistan. Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld were on hand to witness this historic event, the charismatic Hamid Karzai being sworn in as the first popularly elected President. The administration is often touts America's foray into Afghanistan as an example of what the war on terror is all about. President Bush had this to say about Afghanistan during our recent presidential campaign: "Today, Afghanistan is an ally in the war on terror, and 10 million people, 41 percent of whom are women, have registered to vote in the upcoming October presidential elections. Think about that for a minute. This country has gone from darkness to light because of freedom, and America and the world are better for it."

Interesting that they said "just" three years... it seems it would usually be spun as "three LONG years"...

10 million registered to vote, 41% women! That's an awesome thing. I pray that the pattern for freedom and liberty continues there.

I think it would be difficult to argue that for women, lives have already improved. They can vote. They couldn't even go to school before.
