Name: Tisoy

Comments: I was recently introduced to Runequest and I have to say I'm really liking their character generation and combat, it just makes more sense. Comparing that with the more popular D&D which one do you feel is the best for a table top group of about six people?

Runequest vs Dragons and Dungeons

While my group's "go-to" game was Warhammer Fatasy Role-Play (1st and 2nd Editions), I played Runequest a few times and enjoyed it well enough.

If you found the Chaosium Runquest, it uses a form of what is known as the Basic Roleplaying System (BRP), which also powers the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying system, which relies on a 1-100/percential "rollunder" mechanic for task resolution, and is skill-based, rather than using levels or classes. I found the magic system was probably the most confusing or at least tedious part of BRP Runquest, though Strike Ranks also seemed a but of an unnecessary step.

The newer Mongoose version of RQ, also using a similar D100 system, though I haven't played it, is said to perform somewhat like the Chaosium version, and magic remains nebulous, and while there aren't strike ranks, characteristics and even your equipment determine various in-game effects in combat (besides just your armor and weapons), and it is said the potential for a combat can take even longer than in a D&D session, depending on the options used. Still, I'd prefer a more organic game such as RQ, with a more open and "humanist" system, down to the career selection, allowing so much more personal player choice and determination.

I started my role-playing experience with Runequest back in the 80's. I've played most of the major systems out there and I have to say that I liked the old Chaosium Runequest the best. I actually really enjoyed the lower power level and the greater susceptibility to death. I have both the Chaosium version and the mongoose version at home.
